William Dean is a Queenstown artist who paints in oils with a softly mysterious realism that reflects the transformational nature of this remote town in the centre of Tasmania. Mists and fog, verdant hillsides turned into mining waste and being reclaimed by the forest again and sublime cloudscapes  like castles in the air are his subjects. His dark drawings are Gothic, Fuseli meets Blake.
