Briar Bird and the Rose
Machine and hand stitched textile sculpture, cotton, silk, paint, wire, wood, vintage thread, 64 x 30 x 24 cm
Grace Garton is an artist skilled in sculpture, illustration, mixed media work and animation. Her imaginative works have charm and wit, at first deceptively childlike, but with the edginess of a really gritty fairy tale. Grace subverts the traditions of rag dolls, making her own patterns for people, animals and mushrooms. The finished works are sublimely finished with coats of polished beeswax but at close look the tree trunks are made of discarded brushes and the bear’s claws are rusty panel pins.
